Stone Chariot of vijanynagar Hampi karnataka

Image
The "Stone Chariot", as it is often referred is the flagship tourist attraction of Hampi. This is not a chariot ,as the name suggests, rather a shrine built like a chariot. This is located inside the Vittala Temple campus. You would be visiting the Stone Chariot as part of your Vittala Temple tour. In mythology Lord Vittala is an aspect of Lord Vishnu (See Gods of Hampi and Mythology of Hampi). Garuda (lord of eagles) is the vehicle (mount) of Lord Vishnu. The Stone Chariot once contained the icon on Garuda, though the shrine is empty now. This shrine is in the axis of the massive Vittala Temple and faces the sanctum of Vittala Temple. It may appear to you (and sometimes even referred to) as a monolithic structure. In reality this stone shrine was built with many giant granite blocks. The joints are smartly hidden in the carvings and other decorative features that adorn the Stone Chariot. The chariot is built on a rectangular platform of a feet or so high. All aro

It became the centre of the Hindu Vijayanagara Empire capital in the 14th century. The Vijayanagara Empire was defeated by a coalition of Muslim sultanates; its capital was conquered, pillaged and destroyed by sultanate armies in 1565, after which Hampi remained in ruins. Located in Karnataka near the modern-era city of Hosapete, Hampi's ruins are spread over 4,100 hectares (16 sq mi) and it has been described by UNESCO as an "austere, grand

Because of these uncountable carvings, the place gets the name “Sahasralinga” (thousand Shiva Lingas). Sahasralinga has become an important pilgrimage place.                                                                  "दुर्ग " Durga temple is the biggest and arguably the most attractive temple at Aihole. Though it is called Durga Temple, it has nothing to do with goddess Durga. The name of the temple may have derived from the word ‘durg’ meaning fort. As one enters Aihole from the north, this temple is found near the fort and people should have named it Durga (fort) temple. The most important charm of this temple for which it is celebrated is the, apsidal character of the posterior part of this architecture. Generally apsidal or Gajapristha form is found in Buddhist monuments. Nevertheless, this temple being non-Buddhist and yet having an apsidal posterior part is an mystery, which has not been explained satisfactorily by art historians. The design of our parliament is a bigger replica of this magnificent monument Unesco World Heritage Sites #Aihole
